Would anyone remotely know whether or not I would be able to upgrade the processor in my Mirror Drive Doors tower up to a G5 when they're released?

1.It seems that the very different bus design of the 970 stops that from happening.
2. Being a really fast CPU and also lacking a L3 the 970 really really need a fast bus. So even if someone could hang a 970 on a 100/133/167 MHz bus it would be severly starved.

This was already discussed in this thread http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...ht=upgrade+970

Basically, it's a bit early to discuss such things, as a Mac with a PowerPC 970 chip isn't available yet. Once a Mac with a PowerPC 970 chip has been out for a couple of months, someone may be able to give you an educated guess if such upgrades are likely.

I have to agree with Dr. Boar that a 970 would probably be starved by bus bandwith considering that Dual G4's are already starved on a 167 Mhz bus.

Umm, I'd guess at a resounding No!

Even if you could sort out the serious FSB issues, all performance would be strangled out of the chip due to the probable extensive architecture differences on the MB...

I really don't see what the point would be, I would just buy a new machine...

The engineering of such an upgrade is a fairly straight forward process. CPU upgrades based upon drastically different architectures aren't really that unusual.

However, (a big however), it is likely that such an upgrade would not offer a significant enough performance boost to justify the price needed to recoup development costs. MB bandwidth is a bottle-neck that wouldn't be addressed by a CPU upgrade.
