My mother just bought a new eMac 800Mhz off the apple education store (she's a teacher) but this entry model comes without an internal 56k modem. My mother needs to access the internet so what are my options?

Ive been looking into External USB modems but from what ive seen hardly any are mac compatible which is abit of a bugger. I dont know anything about the internal connections in an eMac so what are my options for purchasing an internal 56k modem?

This is pretty urgent as it should arrive in a few days.

Can anyone please help me?

If worst comes to worst, you could go the hard way: get an AirPort base station and buy a AirPort card for $79. It doesn't have to be an Apple base station, you can get a nice NetGear model for $80 or less.

The thing with that is the reason my mother bought the educational eMac model in the first place was to save money. Rather than pay 70quid for an airport card she could have just had the £649 regular model.

Would apple sell the modem seperatly to me?

In order to not void your warranty, take it into a Apple Autorized Dealer and tell them you want to install a modem in your emac. They will order one and install it for you..

Sorry, I don't know. Try calling your local Apple Authorized Reseller...

Absolute cheapest I found on maczones search. Not a lot of info. You'll have to do some research to make sure you don't get burned. It's like $41.

I think it would be just as much of a hassle to get a modem for a PC. The "hassle" to which you refer is because you're taking the time to shop around for a good price, not because it's a Mac. And when you do get it, it will probably "just work." Compare that to the real hassle you'd have installing a modem on a PC.

I bought a modem for a PC not too long ago, walked into a shop, payed less than 10quid and plugged it in. Job Done. Ooh and the **** thing is it work faster than the modem that came built into my powermac.

So, why don't you use that one? No drivers?

My mum is the same. Always trying to save at the wrong opportunity. Damnit.

Actually if I remember correctly I believe that the modem on the eMac is some how tied into the last of the three USB ports, so I would guess that your iMac modem would be of little use.

Yeah I tried convincing her to get the combo drive model but she threw that out of the window and she nearly decided against getting a computer unless it was cheap cheap cheap. 649 was even to pricey.

The only other option was building a PC and theirs no way im having more than 1 PC (for games) in my house. Blerch . (im hypocrytical im writing this on the PC now because I couldn't be bothered to switch the VGA connector over (1 monitor as im skint )
