Hi, I posted here earlier about my problems with the Chooser..since I've been working on this, I had a few freezes while in Internet Explorer, and another problem when trying to access the Page Setup dialog from the finder....it gave a message about not having enough memory (RAM) but I've got 640 MB in my G4 Quicksilver...didn't make sense...I turned off virtual memory since I didn't realize it was on anyway...later tried printing, nothing, went to chooser and after selecting the port, it actually gave the message about "you have changed your current printer.." (hadn't come up before)which I though was good until nothing happened...then it quit giving the message "chooser unexpectedly quit, error type 3"...and upon the next restart I got the message: Finder could not start up because a problem occurred initializing the following system library: Object SupportLib"..it wanted me to start from the OS 9 CD but the problem is that the eject key on the keyboard hasn't worked for a while (I put the app onthe desktop and in the control strip as a workaround);so I couldn't eject to put in a CD so all I could do was hit restart..and THEN I get the folder with the dreaded blinking question mark alternating with the apple face logo. Since I have the dual 9.2/OSX (I have only used 9.2 except to look around OSX a bit)...what does that mean? I am guessing I need to do a clean reinstall of system software. However, if I can't get it to eject, how can I get the disk in?...is there a manual CD eject button on the tower itself? I just read that holding down the mouse button will eject it too...i will try that...but is there any release button or lever on the machine itself?
any thoughts or suggestions?
is a clean reinstall necessary?
what IS the ObjectSupport Lib??

my little printing issue has turned into a real pain!

Thanks for all your help!

BTW, I ran Disk First Aid prior to the mess and it reported that it seemed to be OK!
Another question...can I rebuild the desktop or reset the PRAM if I'm starting up from the OS 9 CD?

thanks again!

If you're looking for help with the classic Mac OS, you should really post in that forum. Object Support Lib is a code fragment file that is used by certain applications. I didn't know that the file is used by the Finder. It sounds like a reinstallation is in order, but Alsoft's DiskWarrior would be a great investment for you, since it can do wonderful things. (Disk First Aid is worthless in comparison to DiskWarrior)

Anyway, to get your drive open, restart holding Command+Option+O+F to go into Open Firmware. At the prompt type cd eject, and your drive will open. Put in your boot CD, close the drive and type reset-all to reboot. Hold down the C key while the machine is restarting to boot from the CD. At that point you can figure it out. I would advise running DiskWarrior. You may also want to attempt to boot into OS X by selecting it in Startup Disk.

You have a capable machine, so why aren't you running OS X? Unless you have some crucial piece of Classic software, there's really no reason not to use OS X. The Classic Mac OS is gone, and it's time to move on. . .

The answer is simple; remove ObjectSupportLib from your system folder. It is not needed in systems (after 8.6 I think.. definitely not in the 9's). It is actually detrimental in the newer systems. It was needed at one point to provide functionality, but has since been incorporated into the OS.

You probably have it because some brain-dead installer looked for it. For whatever reason a lot o MacOS 9 installers still think they need to install it. The biggest culprit that I had to heal with was the old installer for Eudora.
