Hi, I was told that the internal Pioneer DVR 105 will fit inside my 2002 QuickSilver 800MHz. I had thought not, given the beige front plate of the drive, but one is supposed to remove that. Do I in fact just remove the face plate and replace my original drive with this one? And is there anything I should be aware of in terms of sleep, using iDVD, etc. Thanks.

I wouldn't think iDVD would have troubles with that drive. I think iDVD supports all those Pioneer drives.

Thanks.

The Mac site says this is iDVD compatible. I was just worried about the problems with sleep and kernel panics. I just don't need this right now... I just wanted to see if people were having a lot of troble with this?

I got so fed up with the problems I was having in iDVD with my Apple SuperDrive (DVR-103) that I went to Staples and bought a DVR-105. Slapped it into my Quicksilver Dual 800, updated the firmware to 1.33, and WHAM! DVD's in iDVD with NO PROBLEMS.
Rips music in iTunes faster too...

Yup, the face plate should come off easily if you pull a bit from the bottom and then lift upwards.
You shouldn't have any problems with the drive because it's pretty much the same drive Apple uess (I'm not sure if the DVR105 is the OEM version or not.)

Ya, mine seems to be one it's way out. I whines, reads from CDs like molases, and has trouble burning DVDs. Is the whine normal? And, like 500 k/s for reading CDs, what about that?

Is an off the shelf DVDR-105 bootable? OR whould I still need to keep the old drive in case I need to update to 10.3 (or .4 or .5) or just reinstall some system software?

You should have no problems, I picked up an A05 recently for an old Sawtooth G4, and it's 100% supported according to System Profiler. Disk Copy burns CDs and DVDs with no problems yet, and I'm pretty sure it booted OK. This is with 10.2.6.
