I wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing what I am with one of the latest revision eMacs (released in May 2003). I have a 1GHz superdrive model on which the CRT displays a blue gradient on the right edge approximately 1 to 1.5 inches wide fading out towards the center. The left side shows a fainter brown tint in the same fashion. It's most visible on a WHITE background.

Other than this, the monitor is fine--no blurring, no flickering, etc. The tints get worse as the monitor stays on, and are not there at all if I boot up after the computer's been off for a while.

I have no other electromagnetic devices near the eMac, I've tried different rooms in my house, and other CRTs in the house have no such problem.

The eMac I bought exhibited the problem, and it's replacement (new, from the apple store) is what I'm typing on now, and it too exhibits the problem. Apple support has expressed interest in capturing it to see what the problem is, but I don't have much confidence that the unit I will get in exchange (apparently a reconditioned unit) will be free from the problem.

Anyone else seeing this problem on their NEW eMac?

I just got an eMac 1 GHz Combo and I don't really see what you are describing. How long have you had your machine before it started showing weird colours?

Cheers,

Sander.
Have a nice day!

Both machines showed the problem out of the box. (I've had it for under a week.) Easiest to see if you choose the white "solid color" background in the desktop preferences then look at the far right and far edge of the screen. Awesome that your screen isn't doing it. Gives me hope that a repair might fix it.

I have a 1ghz emac w/ superdrive that was purchased ~1 month ago. It exhibits none of the problems you have mentioned. It stays 24/7 as well so such problems would have surely revealed themselves by now. All I can say is you keep getting lemons. ...either that or you have some sort of strange electromagnetic field about your house. Is the problem apparent at all resolutions? Assuming thats not the case, keep on bugging apple about it. You deserve a flawless machine for your money. - Make sure you get it.

Also no problems here with my eMac. I must say that I'm very, very pleased with this machine. The best all around Mac I've ever owned!
Good luck.

Thanks for all the support, everyone. I contacted Apple and they've decided to "capture" this one as well to figure out what's wrong. I'll get a replacement in 3-10 days. Annoying to have to pack up a computer and install all my software and files all over again on a replacement, but if it gets me a fixed screen, it'll definitely be worth it. Adore the computer aside from the display!

wish me luck...

I am glad that Apple is taking care of you. I have had nothing but good things to say about their service and support over the last 4 years. Because of that I went through 2 iBooks, 3 iMacs and now have an eMac and still my iBook. I am itching to get a Powermac but the money is not there right now. If I could never touch a Windows box again I would be glad.
