Hi, I custom installed this Dual G4 1.42 with OS9.2.2 INT and though it won't boot from an OS9 installdisk it runs OS9 fine.

However, the computer doesn't make any sound, the fan makes lots, but I was hoping to enjoy some music while working. At the moment, I don't even hear a startupchime.

The audio-jacks (in/out) are empty and I am very sure it is a systemerror because both Apple Pro speakers as the internal speaker remain silent. I already renewed the extensionfolder and some preferences.. My OS9 volumebutton is at it's maximum.

might be a stupid question but has it ever made any sound? eg. have you tried OS.X and been able to hear sound from that?

if you don't want to install OS.X just to hear if there's sound you could try to dl a Linux liveCD and try prying sound from that.

as an extra bonus you could try if a headphone gives sound. might be something is broken but headphones could work.

Thank you very much for your input, I tried headphones in the front and back audio-outs but both are silent. I can't even hear a startup chime.

I zapped PRAM 6 times and can't hear a startupchime. This machine is messed up. is it an option to press the CUDa switch? Maybe the g4 will return to factory setting like that

more tests :

I ran a Apple Hardware Test and it said everything was fine

Just to give the G4 an operating system to work with, I inserted the macosx.2.1 installation disks. The G4 runs the cd's extremely slow, it takes a lot of time just to get to Disk Utility and have it format the harddisk. Eventually the installation process stops because of an unspecified installation error

I hope some of you bright people notice all the sad smilies in this post. It reflects my desperate mood. Help

edit 2 :

osx installed onto the g4. still no sound

could someone please focus on my problem of not having sound?

I installed 9.2.2
I installed X.2.1 (as provided by Apple)
I tried all audio-ports, front, back, prospeaker plug. even the microphone doesn't detect any sound.

I think your motherboard is defective.

Set OS X to the default, delete 9, and call apple. Tell them the symptons and what you've gone through and that you believe a new motherboard will fix it.

That should get it taken care of

Oh yeah.. don't worry, OS 9 is NOT what caused it believe me.

if there is no sound from the headphones etc... i guess your audio-out port is broken. back to OS.X and then back to apple!
