From what I've read, PCI-X is backwards-compatible (big surprise that Apple chose it then). From the PCI-X 1.0 description it sounds as though having a regular PCI device plugged in keeps other devices operating at its speed, so you won't want to have a 33 MHz sound card in there alongside your Fibre Channel card (not that you'd really need most non-pro sound cards on a G5).

Yup.
But just for the sake of completeness: PCI Express is a serial bus.
At the heart of it is a single serial link with 2.5 GBit/s; you can use up to 32 of them in parallel.

E. g. the graphics connector of some prototype boards use 16 parallel links whereas for the `normal' peripherials, they use 2x or 4x links.

In this nitpicky sense, PCI-X (up to 8.5 GBit/s@133 MHz SDR) could be faster if compared to a 2x-4x PCI Express link.

PCI Express is not compatible to PCI and PCI-X cards. For all the Germans out there: just take a look at c't magazine's article (02/03, p. 88 ff.).
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
