This is what apple will probely do to close the Mhz gap and keep the price resionable. They can still make g4's but make them go to speeds of 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 then they make the g5 with speeds of 2.2, 2.4 and 2.6 that way they can get a big leep and would help them out possibly. cuase a 1.4 g4 and a 1.6 g4 speed wise wont make that much of a different but would make it so that the g5 can compeat with the p4 and amd athlon xp. that would be a great marketing stragity. and if they do it all with in a tight time period it would make perfect scence. and then they can keep using the g4 for the imacs like every month they roll out to till they ketch up.

There is a reason we dont have 2 ghz G4s right now, they arn't going to magically be fabricated. Your predictions are impossible with the current chip market. People were surprised when the 2 ghz 970 was slipped, because the talk was that the highest chip being produced was 1.8, so don't expect a 2.6 970 to show up on monday.

Why would making a 1.6ghz G4 suddenly make it possible to make a 2.6ghz G5? If Apple could make a machine with a 2.6ghz chip, they sure as hell would be selling it.
