There is no need to lock every single thread that discusses the G5.

Big deal - it was announced at WWDC. That's no reason to quarentine all G5 discussion to those threads.

At least form a new sub-forum (much like the political forum in the lounge), because Tooki's locking frenzy is destroying discussion.

The locking was just for today.
I think it worked pretty well.

I dunno. I was hoping for a little more granular topic discussion. Everything that looks like it might have been potentially interesting is locked.

I'll see what happens tomorrow.

By the way, feel free to complain, but incase you didn't notice, most forums had a sticky for WWDC discussion, with a note in them to discuss in those threads, and that others would be locked. Notice a pattern? That's right, we planned this.

They planned the Titanic's last voyage too, that doesn't make it any less of a disaster.

Moderation should be used in moderation.

I think just not visiting anymore would be the more likely answer.

It seems like there was a heck of a lot more discussion of todays events on just about any other Mac (and even non-mac) related forum than there was on MacNN today.. That seems kinda telling, to me anyway.

look, the servers have big spikes during these things, do a quick search around the net, everyone had to do some containment on threads, etc. no biggie.
i look in your general direction

A riot in moderation.

We're only going to loot every other thread.

I did notice, and I understand that you planned it this way, but it was a bad idea anyway. Apple launches new Macs that are the largest leap forward since the G3 at least. They show a new OS that has not been leaked at all. Either of those two things would have been _the_ major topic for discussion on any day. How many _other_ topics were posted? ook at how many topics are active on a normal day - why reduce that to 5 (or however many there were)?

My suggestion: Put a sticky up there _asking_ people to use the official threads, and use locking with some granularity, eg if two threads discuss the exact same article on some site then lock one thread.

If everyone bothered to read the stickies, there would have been enough threads to discuss everything. But in everyone's zeal to spout off about the new stuff it seems no one bothered to look. If a new thread was needed, how about sending a mod a PM to suggest it? This isn't a case of the mods being power-mad. They're trying to avoid a complete server crash and the inevitable follow up bitching, "You guys should have known about the traffic spikes and done something to avoid it! Man, these forums are teh L00zr!"

Nobody is trying to stifle the free flow of information and opinions. Just the opposite in fact. But hey, if this doesn't make sense to you, why not head over to OMGWTFBBQ. I'm sure their server load was minimal.

Understood, but the topics were too generic and harder to follow threads on specific ideas. (Just my opinion ... worth about as much as you pay for it.)
