Hi everyone, I'm new here - but since I'm soon to purchase my first ever Mac, making the switch from Windows - I'll be sure to post more often here - looks like a great community.

However, one factor remains before I buy my eMac (the cheapest spec, as it is my first Mac)...

Will Panther work with the eMac? - once it's released, will I be able to upgrade from Jaguar -> Panther?

If someone could make a speedy response I'd be sooooo grateful, as I'll go ahead and order it tonight

If you're wondering about the RAM in the lowest spec eMac, 128MB - I'm going to upgrade this to around 512MB as soon as I get it.

Yes Panther will work with the eMac. It will probably work with the slowest G3 out there in fact. Apple would be foolish for it not to work.

Super idea.

OS X loves RAM-- I run 1 GB in my iMac (maxed out) and I noticed a big difference from my previous 384 MB. I can't imagine 128 MB in X.

I have 512 megs of ram in the eMac...256 came with it and I added 256. What is the max I can go to? If I remember there was only one slot for me to add the ram to. Will 1gb of ram vs 512 make a difference?

Yeah, you can put two dimms of 512MB in the eMac. Thing is, you'll need to take out both the 256MB dimms.

As for making a difference - I wouldn't know as I haven't got mine yet.

I can, the eMacs at school for Photoshop and scanning have only 128MBs and OS X really is a dog. To be honest Apple is giving OS X a bad image shipping the machines with so little RAM, makes the computers seem well like slow.

From what I have been reading in some of the other forums, there are huge speed improvements in panther which are realized by slower machines. I think you'll be all set.

Panther preview runs great on the eMac. I'm running an 800MHZ with 768 RAM and it sings along great.

I have an imac DV 400
256 mgs of Ram
Panther runs great on it.

Read with interest Dex!

I have a DV 400 with 384 RAM and I was wondering if Panther would work on it, cos my 10.1.X is pretty shaggy right now. Looking forward to a wipe clean! And a new OS to fix a ot fo the bugs that have crept in with software hacks.

But also wondering if I'll have to start again by reinstalling OS9.0 9.1, 9.2 etc. Well at least I partitioned so probably won't 'have' to.

I'm glad to hear that Panther works at least as well as Jaguar does on the eMac. I have been quite happy with the performance of my eMac since I maxed out the RAM to 1024MB.
