Just wondering if anyone else thinks these are a very good deal?

We won't know how good of a deal that is until we get some 1.6 G5 benchmarks comparing it to the DP 1.25

Considering these models are not the most recent G4 and were originally released last August, I don't think they are that good a deal.

No Firewire 800, no Airport Extreme, no internal Bluetooth, have to pony up another $200 if you want the Superdrive...

That's tough. I'd like to hear some comments on this. Is a Dual G4 faster than a single G5?

i guess its a tougher choice then I first though, but man, I could totaly see myself regreting not getting teh g5...um, its 64bits...go for it.

The Mitsubishis Apple sells with their desktops are great monitors...check em out at pricewatch (or skip that step and see wahts likely the lowest price at newegg.com)

P.S. I think I remember these not showing up in the normal store as an add on....you gotta go to the educatoinal store. Its a 22in (20 viewable) monitor for 699 through apple, 550 at newegg. Would be my first choice for a CRT. Just think, no dead pixels and more screen estate.

Heh, Im getting a dual 2 with teh 20in cinema though

Well tough choice. You might assume that there would be ways to upgrade your lower G5 processor later (although the low end G5 does not seem to have the same specs as the middle and high end maichines (pci, memory and so on)). So the low end G5 might not be such a good deal.

Tough choice really. I would go lower G5 though.

But they do have 2MB L3 cache/processor vs. the 1MB of the later midrange dual 1.25.

I have a feeling that a 1.6 G5 will crush the 1.25 Dual G4. On a pricing note, it is amazing but for a workstation, the G5 is a great deal. Compared to a dual Xeon or a single Xeon it is a great deal. I priced a similarly configured (compare to the dual G5) dual Xeon at close to $4500 at the Dell site! Even a single chip version is a good deal. Apples are finally cheap.
Yes, I know I could buy a PC, but why?

You can get a cheap display for now, maybe used on eBay you would get something better than a CRT...

Go with the G5.

As for your choice of "cheap CRT," go to www.betsbuy.com and buy yourself a 17" "vprMatrix."

$249 when I bought it with a $50 rebate brining it to $199 --
totally flat screen, very clear, very bright, silver design that matches the G5's, can run 1600x1200 at a non-headache-inducing 75Hz, and can go up to -- *gasp* -- 2560x1920! (2048x1536 @60Hz is the highest "supported" res, though).

I bought one recently and I've loved it. Just as good a picture as an LCD, and it works at multiple resolutions (my prime gripe with LCDs is their single-res nature).

Be happy.

But I've read many threads that have talked about how the lower rated Dual processor machines have outperformed a single higher rated processor machine. Mostly to do with multiple apps open and severe multi-tasking and off-loading those tasks to the 2nd processor. All in real world experience.

Or do you think the throughput of the G5 more than makes up for that?
