Yeah, i know all the gossip these days is about the G5, so I hope my G4 question doesn't bore anybody.

I have a Quicksilver 933, and I'd like to add another internal IDE.

I already have 2 in there from before.

I've seen some pix with people having an insane amount of drives inside their case.

What is the recommended max amount of drives one safely can have inside ?

And how do people hook these up ? Do they just split the ide cables, and keep on sharing these between drives ?

Will this slow down the drives in anyway ?

Also, is there anykind of limit on the QS G4s ? Can i put in a 300 giger ?, or do I need to get a ata 100 card for that or something ?

thanx

You can add another HD on the same chain that your optical drive is on.

You are limited to 120GBs per drive as far as I know unless you get an ATA/133 card for them/it.

Oh yeah, the optical chain, i forgot all about that. I assume that would only be ata 33 though, so I guess I wouldn't have to spring for a superfast drive with 8 meg cache, but that's cool, since I'll only use it as backup anyhow.

So 3 is max without adding any other PCI cards I assume then.

thanx

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. All drives on one chain will default to the speed of the slowest drive on the chain. But if you arent going to be heavily using the drive for video or anything, it shouldnt be too noticeable at all.

The AT33 chain for the optical disk will not really slow your IDE drive down much. It can't sustain 33MB/s anyway (and especially 66MB/s) so you won't feel much of a hit. If you do, it's like 1%.

I have 3 HDs in my QS. Two 120GBs and the stock 80GB. I LOVE having room for full system backups and video editing room and MP3s, etc.

Maybe I should blow away that 10GB OS9 partition once and for all?

Nahhh... not yet.

I notice no speed difference when copying to my drive on the optical bus. I'd imagine it may be an issue if you require high speeds, but for file copies, open/save, etc., there is no noticeable difference. G4 933 here too, I now have 3 drives.

In my DP/800, I have four: 2 80GBs (master, slave) and 2x120 on an ATA/133 RAID card.
I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

The issue with getting 4 HDs running in a Quicksilver or similar enclosure is power. The QS ships with enough power for 4 drives, and if you add an ATA/133 PCI card, you can support two drives in addition to the two supported by Apple's own bus. But the fourth power connector is part of the same power for the optical drive. You need to pick up a power extension cord from Radio Shack (about $10) to reach down to the area where your fourth drive goes.

Have a blast.
