I'm thinking of going for Apple's 1.25Ghz SP PM deal. Seems to be a great deal at $1249 (education) and the G5's overkill for my needs. One of my biggest concerns is how loud these things really are? In particular, the mirror-door version, but the quicksilver and older versions as well. I've tried listening to the PMs in stores, but all the ambient noise and lack of apps on them makes it hard to test.
I've currently got a PB 550 and the fans drive me insane. I'll be surfing the web, listening to iTunes, or running the screensaver and the fans come on within a half hour! My girlfriend thought I was vacuuming the first time I bought it! I've got it sitting on one of those podium coolpads and a well-ventilated surface too.
Is the noise from PMs bearable? Is it better than the noise from a PB since it's sitting under the desk? Does the fan fix that Apple recently sent out help at all? Can someone compare this noise to everyday noise - vacuum, traffic, air conditioning, etc.?
I haven't had a PM since 1998, so any help or forum post referral would be greatly appreciated!

If you think the noise from a TiBook is bad, run, don't walk, away from the MDD Power Macs. Unlike others here, I don't think the MDD Power Macs are awful, but they certainly are a lot noisier than a tibook.
BTW, I had a tibook 800 and it never seemed any louder than any other notebook to me. You sure something isn't wrong with yours?

The MDD here is quieter then the Quicksilver. We bought it after they had the fan replacement program.

I normally use a 1Ghz Tibook for editing, but this week I'm on a PowerMac Dual 1.2 G4 (I believe it's the mid-range model before the G5's came out). Surprisingly, the PowerMac seems quiter than the Powerbook on AC power (ie, more fan use). True, the PowerMac is sitting on the floor under my desk, but I had it up on the desktop for a while, and noticed the lack of noise then as well. Don't know how the comparison would hold up against a new 12/17" Alubook, since they are known to be quieter on AC power...
