Right, so I am going to be placing an order for a new computer in the next few weeks...
I have decided upon the Dual 1.25Ghz Power Mac G4 (£1130). I just can't justify (on my student budget) the extra £300 for the single 1.6Ghz G5... that extra cash can go towards a nice monitor, rather than the horrid 15" CRT I would have been able to afford with the G5.
I know the architecture isn't as modern as the G5, but this system is still a pretty powerful Mac, right?
I mean, the little b*gger boasts two processors, it has DDR RAM, it has 2MB L2 cache, it has a rather tasty quartz-extreme capable 64MB ATI Radeon 9000 video card (anything is better than the 8MB Rage Mobility in my iBook)....
So come on, honest oppinions, does this system suit as the first new Apple desktop I have bought in 9 years? (Well, the last one was bought for me by my parents when I was 11, and that was a Performa 630)...
It will be used for my uni word processing work, light graphics work, web design and publishing, and internet tasks... Good deal for £1130?
Any thoughts?

I would say that sounds like a great deal! My desktop is a nearly 2 year old single 867 Mhz Quicksilver, and I deal with graphic design and such a fair bit, and it still does everything I need it to. The only thing that I feel gives me any problems is my GF2 video card. That is the only part I am unhappy with now, but I can't bring myself to spend the money for a new card. So I would say you will be very happy with a dual 1.25, especially coming from an ibook, as I have one of those as well.

I'm going for a single processor 1.25 Ghz myself! (unless I can persuade myself to get that Dual). How can you beat $1250 for a single and $1599 for a dual? I think it's a great deal and is going to be a huge change. I'll be coming from a PB G4/550, so we'll both see a huge jump in performance, even without that G5.

Don't get a G4...they are loud, and if you are a student as I am, it will totally distracting when youa re trying to work...I'm not joking, it's really bad.
The new G5 is not only quieter, but it runs cooler due to it's design and therefore needs less fna operation to cool.
Spend the extra $300 for a G5 and don't hesitate to spend it.
