and slap it into a G4 tower? I can't afford a G5 yet, and I need a new computer SOON- I was hoping that I could just take my HD from my old iMac DV 400 and put it in the lowest priced G4 tower. Is this possible?

Sure.... for multiple drives inside the G4 tower, you may want to put the drive's jumper to "cable select"

Should work just fine.. one of the great things about osX is you can swap it around in diffrent computers and X will work just fine. I use a FW drive to test things with on my G4 tower and my iBook.. it works fine on both.

I would sugest that after you put it in that new G4 you clone your old drive onto your new one. I'd assume the drive in the new G4 would be much faster than the one you have in your iMac, if you've upgraded that mac with fast new drive then never mind.

Carbon Copy Cloner works GREAT for this.

I am gong to assume that I will be able to drop my harddrive into a G5 as well. After comparing the machines, I can get a bottom end G5 for around $300 more (educational discount, downgrading the superdrive, etc.)

you be assuming wrong... unless your hard drive is SATA your not... You'll be droping it into a firewire case and hooking that up.

but, there seems to be some worry over whether they can fit inside the case
