Alright, now that the G5s are out and we're all giddy about them, I was wondering if anyone else just went ahead and ordered a G5 just because you want one?
We've all read the threads of the video pros and those that are on a budget, but are there any other crazy people like me who, admittedly, doesn't really need one, but has nothing better to do with their money? Also, please note this is not meant to be a 'snob thread', just curious...
Here's what I ordered:
Power Mac G5 - Dual 2GHz
Bluetooth Module
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB, ADC/DVI
1GB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 2 DIMMs
Mac OS - Int'l English
Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5
Apple Keyboard - Int'l English
AirPort Extreme Card
DVD-R/CD-RW
Country kit
250GB Serial ATA
Apple Cinema Display (20")

You behave like me, only on ca$h steroids =)
It's not in my budget right now, but with a dual gig + 22" cinema-display and an 800 mhz ibook i think i tend to go in your general direction when i comes to cash.
lets hope the thread doesn't turn into a snob-thread =)
i think we never learned the value of money right =)

I think you're right... money tends to burn in my hands. And yeah, this is really not a snob-thing, it's just that I am single with no family to support, or any other type of payments to make...

Well, economically speaking 'snob value' is buying something because it's expensive. I know a few people like that.
I all truth a stock 1.6 GHZ G5 would do me fine, but I'm going for the dual 2GHz with all the trimmings (2x 250GB, 9800, 23"...) not because I'm a w ker (not recently anyway ), but to try and give me some sort of future proofing.
Well, that's what I tell myself.

well, I wouldn't go as far to say I have the cash lying around collecting dust, but I had a small amount of stock in my company that I bought in January, not enough to do any damage, but basically it was there to keep me from spending it foolishly. I told myself that I'll use it like a piggy bank, and when there was something I really wanted that was completely unnecessary I'd use funds from it. So it's made about $3500 so far this year, which is about $2500 less then the dual 2ghx + 23" cinema display that I'll be purchasing this august...

I make a good living, but I have a wife and two kids. When the G5s were announced, I started selling stuff and doing some consulting to pay for it.
I am about $1000 into the $1500 I want to earn, and then I'll throw in about $1500 of my own cash and get a dual-2GHz and an extra 1GB of RAM (I have a friend who buys in volume, so I can get the G5 for about $250 off the list price, so I'll spend that on RAM).
If anyone wants a good, cheap sawtooth G4, I'm selling one with lots of extras and upgrades for $650. PM me if interested.

I ordered a 2x2GHz... the minimum configuration (I'll add the goodies I want after I get it, at a much lower cost). No, I don't need one, but I'll be damned if I'll let that stop me.
Seriously, why would people buy the overpriced memory, HDs, and various other system upgrades from Apple? It's ridiculous.

i have to diagree with you on the over priced hard drive point. To upgrade to the 250gb drive is $125. If you bought the drive from a retailer like newegg, the 160gb is $160, and the 250gb is $400. Seems like a pretty good deal from apple. And the logitech speakers for $299, whil a few dollars more than newegg, is still cheaper than you'd find at Bestbuy for $399 or Compusa for $349...

Some people will buy the RAM from Apple because they don't worry about the cost. Some people have enough money they don't have to worry about an extra couple hundred buck marked up.
These people go into the store and ask for the best one. Not neccesarily the most expensive, but the best. Well, the G5 is the best, and you need to get plenty of RAM. They guy that goes in and pays cash for the BMW because his girlfriend might like it, isn't going to want to shop around for RAM to get the best deal.
I am not this person. I shop around. I'm not getting a dual G5. I'll be paying bills. Stupid bills.

The price to go from 160GB to 250GB is stupid. Buy and additional 160GB HD from an online vendor for $150 and you have 320GB of ultra fast storage. And there's no way I'd spend $300 on computer speakers.
