I'm surprised to see that the new G5 Powermacs will no longer fit into 19" rackmounts. Has anyone noticed a way that this could be made possible (eg. removing handles, installing at a 90º rotation, etc.)?

This is a fairly significant inconvenience for myself and several of my colleagues. I'm curious to hear if this concerns others as well.

Without being flippant, does it matter these days?

There are probably G5 Xserves designed for the very purpose just around the corner...

Unfortunately it does indeed matter to me. If the relative differences between Powermac G4 and XServe G4 remain the same, Users in my position will still have to go with a Powermac due to the need for more than 1 free PCI slot. Which incidentally brings up the point that Apple has removed yet another PCI slot in the G5 (from the previous G4 generation hardware).

Of course there is the option of not only paying the increased cost of an XServe, but also a PCI expansion chassis. It just seems that would be misdirected for the mere 1-inch of excess height that causes this to be an issue.

This topic was not meant as a complaint but rather an inquiry as to whether others have found solutions to this problem. My current planned solution will be to construct a custom rack that will house both the Powermac G5 and standard 19" equipment. Though not terribly ideal.

Sorry, I totally forgot about the PCI card issue...

This seems to be a hot topic elsewhere as well:

Over at ARS, they are discussing the merits, and possibility of racking a G5 in the Mac forum.

Over at AI, there is talk that Apple is planning on releasing an official Expansion Chassis, connecting via a PCI-X slot...

May be worth a look.

Peace,

Marc
