Just read this article

http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/main_...fm?NewsID=6548

Seems like this passage below means that it might be a bit of a problem to upgrade the cpu in each G5 model.

Cool case

Boger praised the Power Mac's efficiently engineered aluminium enclosure – the number-one goal of which was acoustics. It has a fine-tuned thermal management, including an Apple-invented fan-control system that means a 5,000rpm fan can spin down to a much quieter 500rpm depending on the operation being carried out by the user. The Power Mac director admitted that the cooling system is designed for each model, and therefore Apple does not recommend later processor upgrades in the new systems.

ah, someone always finds a way, anyway - quite a while until there are any CPU upgrades for the G5

I seriously doubt that the cooling is DIFFERENT for each model.

My understanding is that the dual-processor model has 4 fans for the CPUs (one on each side of each CPU), while the single-processor models have just one processor fan.

But at worst, I could see an upgrade kit having to include extra fans and a different clear plastic air guide.

Actually, Apple says the "thermal management" is controlled by the OS. Perhaps if the OS doesn't recognize the processor there will be problems?

Well no, actually.

the fans are controlled by the BIOS, which in turn is controlled by the OS.

HOWEVER.. when there's no OS control the fans just go full blast. This is true with every mac since the G3.

Ever wonder why powermacs get so loud when you reboot them for just a few seconds?

When was the last time Apple did recommend processor upgrades?
