At least I am basing this on my interpretation of the developers documents.

Apple states that the modem will be recognized as a USB modem in the system profiler. I think this means the modem is on an internal USB bus.

Since NOTHING in the current mac universe of modern product uses an old-world serial port, Apple has finally eliminated it, it seems.

Just thought everyone should know.

If I'm not mistaken macs have used a USB modem for quite some time now.

Not too sure. *shrug* Oh well, I know it's been USB since at least the MDD series

It might not be a serial port per se, but all laptop models continue to use ADB to drive their touchpads:

I am guessing this means they could've easily put ADB ports on the PowerBooks (and likely iBooks too.)

Touchpads in PC laptops use the PS/2 port. It seems that the big-scale manufacturers don't want to include the extra chip for USB connectivity.

I personally have to file this one under 'meh, no big deal'. In years of owning macs, it's never made any difference that there was a serial connector on the Mobo. The retirement of old technology I guess...

Yup, all of Apple's laptops moved to USB modems well over a year ago. The flat-panel iMacs always have used USB modems. It's nothing new in any way, shape, or form.

Apple System Profiler doesn't list ADB devices. But if you use an ADB bus diagnostic program, it will show all the devices on the bus -- the trackpad and keyboard.

The internal USB modem does show up on System Profiler.

Unlike all the G3- and G4-based Macs with USB modems, however, the G5's USB modem is not connected to the user-accessible USB buses, though -- it has its own USB bus! (So does the internal Bluetooth module.)

Don't get me wrong, I don't miss the serial port. But some people are desparately clinging to old technology in some way shape or form (like OS9) even though they insist on having the latest Mac!

I just thought I'd rain on any parade they might still be having.
