Is it normal to have the cooling fan spin especially fast on startup, only for it to taper off into a steady spin cycle?

I've noticed that some noises can become 'covered up' once the main fans get really going. It's probably actually louder dbls-wise, but just feels quieter because the white-noise is smoothing things over.

It's because the BIOS has control of the fans but until the OS or controller in open firmware loads, the fans will run at full blast.
I've noticed this in every recent mac to date, including imacs and powermacs

No problem. As long as I have nothing to worry about.
