When i was custom building a G5 (for fun), i noticed that no option existed to put in a second (superdrive, or CD burner).

Is their less room on the front?
Or is this a subtle move (like getting rid of the floppy drive)?

any thoughts?

Yeah, this has sorta been a hot topic since seconds after the introduction of the machine.

It's absolutely goddamn stupid.

There's "no room" in the tower, despite its monstrous proportions, given the machines cooling system.

Rumors are that there is an expansion chassis to go with the machine, to give you hard drive, PCI and Optical drive expandability...

I would love it to be true.

If not, I guess we can have our choice of FW400, FW800 and USB 2.0 peripherals....

To me it is not ideal, but really, could be worse... They could have announced 1.5Ghz G4 machines...!

Maybe Apple will put the board out of one of these into a nice case, with an ata card and a couple of drives.

oh, and the four slot costs $1,145. still want one?

why cant apple just incorporate more into their towers?

its simpler than having extra drives and power cords

I personally prefer external options...

When my G5 arrives, I have seen a nice 'double' FW800 external enclosure that I may buy. Also a FW external CD-RW is pretty much dirt cheap these days, so I will go for one of those...

Luckily I don't need PCI slots.

However, if an extra enclosure had the same design cues as the G5, and offered 6+ Hard drive bays, an optical bay, and weighed in at around £5-600 I would be very tempted...

I think the 'thermal' zone, and the heat of the G5s, precluded any more things being added in this generation...

If they had added more, the machine would have become vastly more unwieldy...

However when the 970 gets a die shrink, or things get cooler, you never know, it may be an option...
