Last night while I was sleeping I heard a strong noise. Woke up to find that the arm on my imac was dead.
Everything is working fine, though it's not possible to move the screen.
Is this a common flaw of the imac?
Are there any good solutions before sending it to repair?
thanks
N

I've never heard of this. It must be very rare. I suggest you just take it to an Apple store, or call Apple.

not hydraulic.
two joints and a pivot, carefully balanced with small amounts of friction to keep it from adjusting itself downward.
Take 'er in. Get serviced.

Well my iMac is going to get its arm repaired.
iMac owners could rest assure, apparently this is a very unusual flaw.
I really want to see what happens once our models are one or two year old.
cheers

Not that I'm an expert or anything...(I'm not going to be getting my 17" for another couple of weeks)...but this is a really unique thing. I've heard from just tons of people who swear that the arm of their iMac is just as firm a year after constant use.
To have one that just suddenly drops in the night...well...that's just plain...weird. Are you sure that there was no indication of weakness prior to it's...loosening it's mortal coil..so to speak?

It's really hard to tell as this is my first flat panel iMac. The arms was functioning really good but again, according to my standards.
The funny (not that funny) thing is that I was sleeping when a heard a really loud noise. I woke up take a look and found nothing. Now...morning...trying to load a CD and guess..it was the arm. The noise was the LCD falling on to the speaker from a 15 cm distance.
You have to check what dead means. I mean it's just dead weight you have to really weight up the LCD to move it.
But again, when to the local apple reseller here in Argentina and told me that they had only two cases similar to this since the inception of the LCD iMac.
Guess I had the 666 lottery ticket.
Cheers

Out of curiosity...are they able to repair the arm, or do they have to replace the whole arm?
Or is it so integral that you're getting a whole new beast?
