Anyone here has 800mhz 17" imac that got diablo 2 loaded? I want to buy d2 but I was wondering how is the performance on this computer. I got MoHAA and it runs great. UT2k3 demo ran very crappy. I wanna play d2 now since 1.10 is coming out soon. anyone can give me an idea how well d2 runs on 800mhz g4 fp imac?
I have a 700mhz eMac and it runs ok, but only in software rendering mode, unfortunatly all macs have this problem no matter what speed. 1.10 is supposed to fix the 3d rendering (hopefully)
Ditto what videian said. I've owned D2 (and LoD) since they were 1st released. It works best in software rendering mode - especially on the higher levels when there are more monsters on screen at once. The only exception to this is if you happen to own an older Mac (or PC) with a 3DFX graphics card. D2 was written from the ground up for Glide/3DFX and is twice as fast 3DFX graphics cards compared to any other - true for both Mac and PC. Other graphics cards/APIs like RAVE (ATI) and OpenGL (ATI/NVidia) tend to bog down ESPECIALLY when there's a lot of action on screen. Software rendering eliminates the slow down problem. You'll get excellent results with your 700Mhz G4 in software mode. I did with a 500Mhz G4 Cube.
However, this may all change in the next few weeks. Blizzard claims to have improved OpenGL performance dramatically in the upcoming D2 v1.10 update. The only requirement is that you have to be running in OSX with a Quartz Extreme graphics card. Your 700Mhz eMac has a 32MB GF2MX which has Quartz Extreme acceleration so you're covered. regards.......joe
If you are interested in an rpg alternative to diablo 2, have a look at Everquest Mac, Neverwinter Nights, Dungeon Hack and perhaps even warcraft 3 (if you like rpg strategy).
