Sorry if this topic has been discussed earlier, but I couldn't find any threads about this... so here I go:
My brother in law has ordered the most low end PowerMac G5. As you might guess, this means that he's on a relatively tight budget, and that being the case, he'd like to avoid paying Apple's ridicilousy high prices for extra RAM.
My question is, can he buy any DDR333 DRAM chip from any old PC shop, or does the new PowerMac demand any special chips? I guess none of us is very familier with the "dark insides" of our Macs since this is an issue for us !
If anyone knows anything about this I'd be happy to hear from you!

As long as the ram is quality ram, yes, he can order from anywhere.
He does need matched pairs, however.

Thanks for your quick answer!
Now I know I sound like moron, but how do we know what's quality ram? Are there any special brands we should look for, or any in particular we should avoid?

Name brand is what I look for.
Personally I order everything from crucial ( www.crucial.com), but any of the brands will work.
Crucial, kingston, corsair, mushkin, and a few others I don't remember.

You need to make sure the RAM is non-ECC and non-buffered. You shouldn't have any problem finding RAM with these characteristics.
A good place to find RAM cheap is pricewatch.com. In particular, for your G5 1.6:
