as header..

up until now, my iMac's DVD drive has been working fine. however, a couple of hours ago i put a DVD in the drive, and it doesn't put a DVD icon on the desktop, nor does it appear in the finder anywhere.

i opened toast to see if it was able to read the disc, and it says "<No Volume> 4.4 GB DVD-ROM". i then tried to copy the disc by clicking record (it's a home-made DVD-R) and i get the error message "couldn't complete the following command because there was an I/O error. result code = -36"

i then tried inserting an original DVD. nothing on the finder, same "<No Volume>" display in toast, same error message in toast.

i've tried re-starting, and shutting the imac down and turning it on again, but the same thing happens.

what gives? i was playing a DVD just before it happened, and i haven't done anything since except use safari.

if it's any help, i have the sony dvd rw dw-u10a drive.

in case of accidental ingestion, consult a mortician.

Sounds like a hardware problem. I'd contact apple or your nearest Apple authorized repair center. Love the Simpsons quote in your sig BTW
