It's impossible to even attempt to answer your post.

Please, for goodness sake, type in Word first, get rid of all the errors, and then try posting. Seriously, I can't understand anything in your post.

As always, get the fastest machine you can afford. If you can afford the fastest, get the fastest (dual 2GHz). That's what I am getting.

I'm with assman above, but if you have the cash, get the dual. It has the best price/performance of the 3 and will retain it's value the longest.

I can't see buying a single processor G5. I don't really need the performance of the top model, but if I buy one, it will be the 2 Ghz DP. I might wait for the next speed bump to see if they put a dual processor in the mid-level machine.

you could do any of those things on any model of apple's current lineup without a hitch. I would say get the next revision of the imac, whenever that comes out.

you do not need a g5

1.25DP + 20"LCD + 2GB RAM
$1600 $1200 $300 (web)

3100 total... way less than a g5 2DP w/ monitor & 8GB

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

You need the world's fastest desktop computer to do word processing and surf the web?

If you must have the latest and greatest and cash is no object then of course go for the dualie.

I think it's time that someone recognize that people are addicted to hardware upgrades (me included), and start a support group!

I just sold my G4/450AGP on eBay. I'm using the cash towards a G5/2x2G. I used my G4 as a web server, web application server (Zope and Tomcat), file server, DNS server, and mail server, as well as runnig apps like BitTorrent, iChat AV, Safari, and doing HTML, java, and Flash development. It handled all of this without a hitch. The machine was getting too slow for some newer games, but I could deal with that for the most part.

When I got rid of the G4, I put the server processes on a 350MHz B&W G3. That machine is handling all of the above tasks with aplomb and hardly breaks a sweat. I moved my java development to my iBook and stopped playing 3D games, but the G3 is still a solid server.

So, if the question is of "need", then the answer is that there are a couple of scientists at Lawrence Livermoore doing calculations that take a month per run on a dual-1.42GHz G4.

But if the question is "why get the G5 if a G4 does the trick", it's because in 2 years, there will be stuff out there that makes my G4 choke, but my shiny G5 will finish the job without a problem. I'm buying against my needs in the future, not just my needs in the present.

I'll be getting my G5 in August/September.

Sounds like you need a iMac or a eMac, not a G5.

And by then, you'll be able to buy an iMac G5 for a grand or so. Why by the latest hardware when it will be 1/2 the price by the time you need it?

If I were going to buy a G5 (not a bad idea if you want a system with long-term prospects) but didn't need absolute cutting-edge performance, I'd get the 1.8 GHz system.

The 1.6 might not be that much slower, but it's obvious that it may be the odd man out in a couple years' time. It "only" has 64-bit PCI slots and half the available memory slots. For $400 more you not only get PCI-X and 8 memory slots, you also get twice the standard memory and twice the hard drive space. It's a worthwhile purchase if it means that you won't have to worry as much about upgrades in the future.

these are all valid points however i do not want an iMac there are already 3 in the family and to be quite honest im starting to get a little sic of them plus desk space is a concern so the G5 can go under the desk so i only hav a flat panel at the backnot in the middle like an iMac would be

im gonna wait till january as it is likely then that there will be an upgrade and even if thre isnt ill hav saved up more so i can get better NEEDED peripherals like AE larger screen and other items like that

BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely agree.

On verge of selling Quicksilver and upgrading to fastest G4 ever made, the dual 1.42...

...FOR ABOUT $600 (effective price after sale of current machine) !!!!

By the time I really need the speed of the G5, it will cost a lot less. I'm targetting a dual G5 towards the end of next year or first half of 2005, for at least $1000 less than the current daul G5 and a whole helluvalot faster. WOO HOOO!
