What do you guys think? I posted recently about getting a dual processor Powermac, but I don't need all the upgradeability of the Powermac.

So, now I'm considering trading/selling my iMac for one with a Superdrive so that I can get into DVD burning.

I would basically be getting a 100 MHz faster iMac with a Superdrive and all other specs would be the same as my current set-up.

I don't know how much I would be able to get for my iMac (700 MHz, 640 RAM, 40 HDD, CDRW) on the open market/ebay.

J and R currently has the 15" Superdrive iMac 800 MHz for $1300 which seems like a damn good deal to me.

I'm also wondering about just getting an external "Superdrive" but I've heard about Apple's DVD Player perhaps not recognizing it and/or iDVD not recognizing it, etc.

Anyway, I'm getting more and more confused as each day goes by. I'm also not sure if I should just wait and see if new iMacs are in the pipeline anytime soon.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

TIA.

Well if you're satisfied w/ the performance of your current iMac, there's no need to buy another. Simply buy an external 5.25" External Optical Driver FireWire Enclosure and pop a Pioneer DVD-A05 (I believe that's the actual "SuperDrive" model #, anyone know for sure?) in it and iDVD will work on it. As long as you get an external SuperDrive (same model as the one Apple sells) you're fine.

iDVD most definitely will not work with an external superdrive.

Icruise is right, iDVD will not work with external drives. Also, the model name of the OEM SuperDrive is DVR-105 and the retail version is the DVR-A05 (I think I've got that right.)

Formac's drives have their own dvd software and also lacie drives have their own software. I wouldn't buy anything from formac, but it's cheaper than buying a whole new mac...

If you're comfortable rooting around inside your iMac and not scared by a little thermal paste, you could just buy the bare drive for about $170 and replace your current iMac's CD-RW. iDVD will recognize the drive if it's installed internally. See here.

I wish I was that bold! Are there any 3rd party vendors who would do this mod for me?

With all of the voltage issues surrounding CRT AIOs (iMacs/eMacs), regular people really shouldn't be attempting to do anything other than install RAM and Airport cards.
