Hey,

I should be able to connect a cable modem to an ethernet port on a 233MHz iMac running OS 9, no?

It has been so long since I played with OS9, and I've never had cable access on my newer iMac running X.

So, I am basically clueless...

Thanks.
Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just.

Yes, you'll use the ethernet port. It'll work fine whether you use DHCP or manually input the IP, DNS, and router address numbers in your TCP/IP control panel of OS 9 or the Network control panel of OS X. OS 9 or OS X, the connections and settings are the same.

This will work without trouble.

Set your TCP/IP settings to DHCP first, as most cable companies use this setting, unless you're paying for a static IP, in which case, use the settings they specify.

Now, some cable companies allow access based on the identifier of the network card. If you signed up for cable with another computer, and switch to this one, you may need to call tech support for the cable and tell them your new MAC address, which is the number that tells them the ethernet ID. You can find this number in Apple System Profiler under the network section.
