Hello,
I have recently been having many problems wih my g4. When I start it up all seems well, but when i click on an application, the application appears in the dock, but doesnt bounce, and then the computer freezes with that spinning beach ball mouse cursor.

Please Help me. Thank you very much in advance

This happens even after you restart?

Have you run FSCK -y at startup? [when you reboot, hold down command-S, wait for lots of scary stuff to finish appearing then type in "fsck -y" and see if it modifies your system. Run it until your system is "OK" and then type "reboot"]

It still happens? Maybe you've installed a whole bunch of software recently? Go to Disk Utility and run verify and repair to make sure your system's permissions are in good shape.

Still freezing up?

Have you tried removing the extra RAM you have installed, one piece at a time, then starting up and verifying that the problem still occurs?

Just some suggestions to start with. Good luck.

I did exactly what you told me to, but it is still freezing. When I couldn't get to disk utility without it freezing. Are their any shortcuts to get there without having to go through menus.

Also. I have noticed a new file on my desktop that has appeared called .DS_Store. This could be some sort of invisible file that has been revealed or something, because it won't let me delete it.

Perhaps you could use the original DVD or CDs that the OS X software is on? I believe you can check your PM's hardware using the Hardware Test CD/DVD - just put it in at startup and it should load automatically.

You could also try deleting any extra shareware you may have installed - sometimes they can cause problems. Have you recently moved apps all over the place or created new folders for some system apps or utilities? When I first began using OS X, I placed all the OS X utilities into different folders and "customized" my desktop. This caused most of the major apps to stop opening and created lots of buggy issues. The solution was to put everything back the way Apple did.

Are there any apps that do open properly or is your entire system buggy? You could even try a clean install or archive and install if your system's out of whack. Of course make sure you've backed up your drive's contents before doing so.

Good luck!
