Our tour guide confided that the PowerPC 970 chip (Apple’s G5) is not yet in production in Fishkill, but it takes no time at all to get a new chip into the line.

So this guy was "confided" info, and he turns and posts it on a website. Right....
I have a feeling that some tour guide would know about as much as the Apple Retail store guys. And that is all of about nothing.
How could Apple have test machines, if the G5 wasn't being producded yet?

Well, and you gotta wonder when he actually visited. He could have visited back in June and his article was "published" just now.

I highly doubt this. I was at the IBM facility in Essex Junction, Vermont, right after the G5 was announce at wwdc. I talked to some of the people there, and they said it takes an average of 3 months to produce a wafer.

This is simply not true, I called apple to add Final Cut Express to my G5 package a day or two ago and they told me that my computer was already being assembled and that while the shipping time would officially still be 3-6 weeks, that likely it would ship right around the 15th of August.
I ordered a 1.8 if that helps convince anyone as I know the duals are supposed to ship later.

I ordered a DP 1.42 on 6/11/2003, to be delivered " ... on or before 7/2/2003"; then it was pushed to 7/10/2003; then it was pushed to 7/24/2003; then I received an e-mail from Apple to call immediately and was informed that the 1.42 DP was no longer available (though it WAS on 6/11/2003 when I ordered it) and would I be interested in a 1.25 DP? So I went ahead and ordered the G5. The rep at Apple said that because I've been waiting since the beginning of June, I'd be "at the top of the list" (yeah, right). When I track the order on Apple's website, it tells me "On or before 9/30/2003".

You lucked out. Dual 2.0 for close to the same price of a dual 1.42, no?
it would ship right around the 15th of August.
Sounds about right. I'd be very surprised if people didn't start getting units within about 3 weeks from now.

I have a bad feeling that Apple will ship like one machine at 11.59pm on the 31st of August. just to satisfy the 'August' ship date...
I have a BTO dualie G5 on order (Edu purchase), and am not hopeful of getting it until mid September...
When I originally ordered here in the UK, delivery was estimated in 'mid August', then I was informed it would be the start of September, now I have been told to expect even later....

It may take that long to produce a wafer start to finish, but "plain" wafers are probably already, err... ready. The G5 is produced from those.

A courier showed up at my condo this morning and I was still in bed so I yelled "just a minute, who is it?" and he replied "Courier, I have a delivery from Apple Computer" and I nearly died.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be just my copy of Final Cut Express that I ordered with my g5
I got excited for a minute there tho

Pay attention to what it says. When it says "is not yet in production in Fishkill" this means it's not in production in Fishkill. This doesn't mean that other IBM fabs are not producing the G5.

So what other places would be able to make these chips?
Anyways, that statement wouldn't worry me.

MacConnection is still telling me my ship date is 8/15 for my dualie. Until I hear differently, I'm going to keep the faith.

Some people have been saying that there was a part change (keyboard?) that occurred, that caused the date to change. But when they called up Apple they said the date should still be Sept. 02 or whatever.
When did you order, and have you spoken with Apple?

That probably makes alot of sense. Isn't the Fishkill FAB a 0.09 micron FAB? It probably won't produce 970s until the 970 is on the 0.09 micron FAB process. IBM is probably using one of their 0.13 micron FABs to produce the 0.13 micron based 970 now.

This what IBM has to say (from here):
The PowerPC 970 is designed in IBM 0.13-micron CMOS silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology and will be manufactured in IBM's new state-of-the-art 300-mm facility in East Fishkill, NY. Sampling is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2003 with production expected in the second half of 2003.
