I might be able to get my hands on a dual 450 from work cheap ($300 or so). I think the price is right, but is this machine worth it if I pop an upgrade into it (say 1GHz single or dual or higher).

It's got a DVD reader which I don't need, the old 16MB video card (which I would happily sell) and a 30GB drive.

I don't expect to use the FW except on rare occations.

With a fast 7200 HD and a radeon AGP card, and a processor upgrade, would this machine be worth it or should I just pick up a used/refurbed 1GHz powermac?

Otherwise, I might give it to my parents AS-IS to replace their iMac 233.

Thoughts?

I can't offer any particular advice, but if you do go for it and do the upgrades, I'll take the dual 450 card off your hands!

I had a dual-450 and it was a great machine. From what I've read, most people thought they were pretty solid and trouble-free. $300 is an excellent price, I've seen them priced much higher.

That being said, I think I'd go for a refurb 1GHz. By the time you've invested in a processor upgrade and a new video card, you're out a chunk of money and the older machine is still constrained by its 100MHz bus. I think MDD 1GHz models are going for about $1,000.

Buy it and put in a Dual 800 or something similar. Don't go for single CPUs. The Dual 800 will feel MUCH faster compared to a single 1 Ghz.

As is it is a very nice replacement for a 233 iMac, keep it that way. Do not uprade it unless your parents are game fanatics

Otherwise you end up
ATI card 150 dollar ( will only improve 3D games)
CPU upgrade 500 dollar or much more (1.2 GHz SP or dual 800 or more)
Bigger HD 100 dollar
the computer 300 dollar
And perhaps a CDRW 50 dollars.
that is 1100 dollars

A DP 450 is nice with OS X if it has enough RAM and if that horrible round puck mouse is replaced with a nice optical mouse

Thankfully, it has the pro mouse and keyboard.

Thanks for the responses.
