Hey all,

I just purchased an Apple refurb iMac SE 600/40/128/CD. It came with OS X.1 installed and booted up and ran perfectly but when I installed Jaguar I immediately noticed a problem with the CD drive. I did a clean 'Erase and Install' since I have no need for OS 9 and I also downloaded and installed the 10.2.6 combo upgrade. The system works perfectly fine and the CD drive is also performing great when a disk is inserted---I can listen to CD's, import to iTunes, etc without problem. The issue I'm having is that when there is no disk in the drive, regardless of whatever I am doing on the computer, the drive makes a 'whirring' noise about every ten seconds or so. This noise lasts for about 2-5 seconds itself. It almost sounds like it it trying to load a disk or searching for a disk. When I insert a disk it pulls in just fine and plays perfectly.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Well, just an update....did a clean Jaguar install, 10.2.6. upgrade and bumped the RAM up to 640 and the noise is still there? Anybody else ever seen this happen?

Thanks!

That doesn't sound right. Is it still under warranty? If so, give AppleCare a call.

I have the same computer as you and the only sound you should hear is the hard drive.
