On the eve of August '03, I say we see dual 2.0 G5's this month.

Just a hunch. Yeilds are (reportedly) high for 2.0GHz chips. Apple still claims G5's will start shipping in August. I can't see the dual's being that far behind. Some people who ordered duals still have an August ship date.
Will some get pushed back to September? Probably. But I think there's just a lot of paranoia going around (or maybe it's just me ) about these things getting pushed back to October.
Of course, I really WANT to believe my dual will ship in August, too, so try not to burst my bubble.

I find your faith in Apple delivery items a very novel concept...
Knowing Apple, they will ship one Dual machine on the 31st August at 11.59...
I am not hopeful even for September here in the UK...

I don't understand why 1.6 and 1.8 machines would ship in the second half of August and 2.0 machines would ship 6 weeks later. It makes no sense.
I put at least as much faith in what Apple tells me as what any rumor site tells me. Thinksecret has a decent track record with software rumors, true. They also said that the lowend G5 model would be available right after the WWDC announcement.
I just think shipping dates are a whole different beast. Apple chose to unveil the G5 at WWDC. Not MWNY. I'm sure they deliberated this decision thoroughly.

The "why" is simple: Because they have 1.6 and 1.8 machines to ship. They don't have dual 2.0 machines to ship. I'm sure they'd prefer they had plenty, but they may not.
The reasons they might not are anybody's guess, but remember, each Dual 2.0 requires twice as many CPUs and either a 1.6 or a 1.8 G5, and since 2.0 is the highest clock speed they're shooting for, the yeilds of 2.0 chips would presumably be lower than yeilds of 1.8 or 1.6 chips.
It's rumored that as a result of the unexpectedly high demand for the dual 2.0G machine, they may introduce a dual 1.8G machine (macbidouille or however you spell it I think claims this, though they're less reliable).
Mostly we'll have to wait and see, but I see no cause for optimism (I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than increasingly heartbroken).

We'll probably see a trickle of machines here and there in August and early September as always, but the the bulk of the preorders probably won't be filled till late september.

By the looks of things, I bet that the dual 2 GHZ is making up over half of Apple's sales for the G5. They not have expected (I don't see why not), and they want to build up a sufficent quantity to fulfill the huge amount of orders they are getting.

Actually IBM was seeing higher than 2Ghz yeilds for the 970, they were seeing most of the processors end up at 2Ghz and 1.8Ghz... there's another post about it.

That's great news for Apple. The biggest profit margin is on the high-end machine.

We should discuss what options folks are ordering that may be driving these delivery dates.
I ordered my DP 2Ghz G5 about a week or so after WWDC and I'm seeing an "on or before 8/29/03" delivery date. I upgraded the HD to 250GB and the video card to 9800 Pro. I dropped the internal modem. That's it.
Could the October ship date estimates be for machines with more exotic configurations?

If it ships in August, I will be amazed. All signs are pointing at negative, but if Apple pulls it off, kudos to them.

Should have included - only change I made was to go to 1gb memory. Other than that, it's stock.
Waiting (im)patiently...
(and I just today brought my iBook to the Apple Store to get it's dead video fixed )
