Eug is 100% sure pro 3D video cards are coming to the Power Mac. Here's why:

1) Dual G5 of course. . That and the superfast FSB and memory bus.
2) AGP 8X Pro
3) Mac OS X is unix.
4) Pixar - migrating to Mac OS X on G5 workstations
5) Kaydara - "Mac OS X is the [3D] platform of the future"
6) Maya
7) Luxology
8) "Pro" 3D video hardware is almost the same as consumer hardware these days, with some minor hardware tweaks and better more specific drivers.
9) Post from ATI employee: "As others have mentioned, a large part of the "pro" market is simply driver optimizations and certification for various pro SW packages. In this regard, the driver scene is VERY different between Mac and PC and the same degree of certification is not required due to Apple's strict rules with respect to driver behaviour as well as its direct involvement in the ICD (the front-end is completely Apple's code)."

There is no question in my mind that we'll see pro 3D video cards fairly soon, and I believe they'll be here by the end of 2003. For those of you wanting an all-in-one machine, the Dual G5 2.0 GHz with ATI FireGL X2 is it.

Good find. This definitely should be a good thing for both Apple and Pro users.

I sure hope so. By the time I can afford a machine like that, we'll probably be at dual 3GHz. A dual 3GHz G5 (1.5GHz bus), few gigs of RAM, OS X, Maya, FireGL X2....

That's my dream game development machine.

that would be a great boost in pro mac sales, becuase it would give apples the power to run professional applications. hopefully, with the pro cards, we get some good mid end solutions for gamers too...

...i can hope, cant i?

IBM, BSD, NeXTStep, OSX, Quartz, 8xAGP, 'Giga-bus', 64bit ...

The only missing ingredients for making the 'definitive' graphics and multimedia workstation are the high end cards and apps ( Maya Unlimited, AutoCAD Pro, 3D Studio Max etc...)

Apple would be in the unique position of having an industrial strength workstation and consumer pc ( 1000's of apps ) under one OS.

Apple should be bold.

Put out your own version of IBM's T221 monitor, the card to drive it, then optimize FCP and Shake for them. The Mac would own Hollywood.

If Apple really stokes the fires of the hardware forge they could even compete with SUN and SGI in the simulation market.

I don't think Pixar would have moved to OS X had it not been for Job's certainty that all the neccicary hardware would be built for it. Then again Jobs can just say to their current hardware manufactures, Pixar buys lots from you, it's in your interest to make for OS X... get it?

hehehe

You know I thought of something else reading this... but I really can't remember... oh well I'm really looking forward to the Mac making big inroads into new markets

Yeah, but nothing fancy yet.

BTW, are there any Maya benchmarks out for the G5 yet?
