OK... I have a rev. A iMac and am going to upgrade my HD to either a IMB/Hitachi 120 or WD 120. I currently have a Maxtor 40GB 7200. I want to know if I go and guy an extra long EIDE cable and set my new drive as the master and my maxtor as the slave, could I put the 120 in the HD slot, and run the cable out the side (took the side panel off a LONG time ago for air folw) and put the maxtor on the outside... it should work right...

As long as you can plug both of them in you can do what you're describing.

I'm not sure if it's great for the HD outside (naked in the outside world) but it shouldn't be a problem. Maybe you should rig some sort of case up for it just to keep it safe.

What you want to do works.
I've done it before.

Don't forget the power splitter.

If this is a long term thing, get a 12 dollar removable hard drive kit just to put the drive in.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Don't get an IBM deskstar drive. They have the nickname "deathstar" for obvious reasons.

Western Digital, Maxtor, and Seagate are all very good options. If you took a vote, WD would probably edge out Maxtor in overall popularity.

I have had Maxtors and WDs and they've all worked perfectly.

IBM deathstars and WD drives are one and the same....

This is why I call WDs Worthless Disasters

Then again it's just my luck.. seagate and maxtor are teh roxor.

If anything vmarks is right.. or whoever that was.. you can get a nice little plastic enclosure for ~15 bucks to keep the drive safe.. and all should be well

COol... it works... doing it right now... Also, I can't find any 12 dollar HD frames (just something to have it in)... I keep finding more expensive 5.25" bay swappable drive things being suggested to me... ANyway, so far so good... Any idea if splitting the power off the small 4-pin off the motherboard might hurt it? Or can it handle 2 HDs you think....
