With Panther, the DVD Player will be able to send a Dolby Digital 5.1 signal through the G5's optical digital out to a receiver equipped to process it and power *serious* external speakers (not the typical computer speaker sub-sat types).

Some of us with G4 PowerMacs are going to be shopping around for solutions we can use to take advantage of this capability. Anybody know of any current or coming solutions for us?

Thanks in advance.

The M-Audio Revolution is your best bet for getting digital sound out of a G4 PowerMac. It's a 7.1 Digital PCI Sound Card that has tons of features for a very reasonable price.

Very cool. Thanks for cluing me in AssassyN. I'll have to keep my eye on this and see how it works with Panther's DVD Player. Definitely looks promising!

Sure thing! This card looks to be the digital answer for G4's!

if you need digital in, look at the roland/edirol ua-30. mine has served me well, and os x support has been there since 10.1 at least.
