I had to have my flat panel iMac serviced today.
When the tech took the base apart he asked if I had any compressed air.
I just so happened to have a can, he blew the compressed air inside the base and you wouldn't belive how much dust came out of it, it fogged up the whole room!
The house is kept very clean so I was shocked at the amount of dust that was in there, he showed me that all the air is sucked up through the vents on the botom of the iMac.

Yeah, i had a similar cloud of dust blow out of my G4 iMac after a going over with a can of compressed air. i thought it was pretty disgusting and this is with an Ionic Breeze air cleaner in the room too.

it's quite incredible, eh? The top vent in my bro's imac was quite messy.
My g4 seems to do similar, except that not only does lint come off the vents but there's always a nice layer of dust in the case.

Perhaps the iMac is better air filter than the ionic breeze?

a circular foam airfilter like those used in some models of lawnmower would allow cool air in but filter the dust.

But they reduce the air speed (especially after some time when they are covered with a crust of dust) and thus it would maybe require higher fan RPM and maybe higher noise level.
After having an original MDD PowerMac I am very happy with the way the iMac is now.
