Something I never noticed... is that the G5's DVI port not only outputs DVI and VGA.. but S-Video and regular RCA as well!

There's an adapter for sale for $19 for it... cool tho.

Yep, with that adapter it'll turn any DVI-out port into S-Video/RCA signal, not just on the G5.

That would be sweet, but the product description in the Apple Store states that it works only for the PowerMac G5.

The Apple DVI to Video Adapter is designed to work with the DVI port on the Power Mac G5 system only.

That could mean they only took the dvi port on the G5 into consideration when they designed it. It doesn't actually state 'The Apple DVI to Video Adapter is compatible with the DVI port on the Power Mac G5 system only.'.

Ummm, isn't that what it states? It's not like Apple doesn't know that they've been making G4s for years that have a DVI port in them.

I think the operative word here is "only". Why did Apple include that word if they didn't mean it only works with the G5?

Logically, I don't see what makes the G5 DVI port any different from any other DVI port, but then again, I'm not Apple.

Personally, I'm inclined to say it would probably work with any DVI mac based on Apple's wording.

I'm not saying it actually will work, because I don't know.

If anyone wants to try it, post here

I'm betting more or less it depends on the card.. on those radeon cards and the geforce fx they probably used the extra pins as s-video and rca...

HP used to do this with their VGA ports to have audio out and in.

Saru boy is right. It pretty obvious the adaptor only works with the new G5s or Apple wouldn't have bothered to say "only".

My guess is that the new G5's DVI connector has pins that can also pass analog video data (generated by the G5). That'd explain why the adaptor only costs $20 bucks.

The G5 doesn't generate anything. It is the ATI 9600/9800 or Nvidia 5200 that is doing all the generating. It is possible that only the Mac versions of these particular cards (i.e. "only the G5") have the analog capability on their DVI jacks...but this seems rather unlikely.
