Why can't i install OS 9 in my imac while i'm running X?

so i installed OSX in my purple front tray loading imac and i now i want classic os 9 but the mofo wont even read my disk!

is there a "secret tip" to starting up a new non - clean install of this disk?

must i press and hold down command c while starting it?

Make sure you install 9.2, not 9.1.

Yes, and then you'll be booting from the OS 9 CD. From there the install should work.
