My parents are. I'm curious what the longevity of it will be, which is why they are going with a G5, not b/c they need it, but b/c they don' t want to upgrade again for serveral years.

I was getting along ok with my G4/450, but I sold it on eBay for the cash towards a G5/2GHz. Did I need it? Nah. Do I really really want it? Yup. Now I just gotta get together the other $1800 I still need to appease my wife.

Getting a dual 2ghz g5 is like buying a ferrari or such for road driving.
You won't need the power often, but it's nice to have for those times when you want it. Honestly after seenig a great deal of "please wait - rendering" and "encoding" things on my g4 dual 800, a g5 that's nearly 2.25x faster would be a dream.
At least 15 min renders would take 6 mins or so.. THAT would be an improvement.. and yes I don't do this allthe time but I've been doing it more and moer.
It's like how when i got my g4 I had about 200mb of personal files..
Now I have over 60gb.. and I still don't have a DV cam o_O

Im going from a G4 400 to a Dual 2Ghz.
Do I need it? No!
Do I want it? YES
That says it all. Since I am 72, this might be my last Mac, so I want it to last for a while.

honestly, does anyone really "need" a G5? That being said, when they announce it's shipping with Panther, I'm getting one...

Once my 2.0 G5 is delivered I will have a 500Mhz G4 and a 1Ghz TiBook. They will all be used and loved.
The 1.42DP was sold to fund the 2.0 Ghz.
You can never have enough speed!

I must be the only one who needs one . I'm a graphic designer and I want a pleasureable and snappy experience with OS X. Until now I've had to work with OS 9. A G5 1.6 GHz should be good enough for me.

I'd really love to get one for Maya wand Photoshop work ... but I don't have the money, or will for a very long time. About the time the dual 3GHz ones come out. Oooooh yeah. Dual 800 it is until then. My icons are gonna go SO FAST on a G5.

The G5 has more power than the G4 and way more power than my 6 year old 8600. For the simple reason of more power, I'm getting one.

I guess I'm one of the few that really needs a G5. I'm working in Logic, typically sequencing 40+ tracks of audio plus ~10-15 software instruments, plus MIDI...it's rather easy for me to bring my DP800 to it's knees.
Just yesterday I had to allocate 700MB of RAM to Logic so it could manage the software instruments..
Needless to say I'm more than ready for my DP2.0 G5 to show up!

Oh Mommy, the best Mac in production only costs $3000? That's a magic price barrier for allot of folks I'd bet. I'm guessing they sell a buttload of those 2GHz DP's.

I have a Yikes G4 400 that serves all my needs, but I ordered a new 1.8 G5. My G4 is nearing 4 years old and the hard drives are full. I don't really feel like buying new hard drives for such an old computer, so why not just get a new computer now? In 4 years I can replace it again. Hopefully the G4 can still fetch a few hundred bucks on eBay - it still runs just fine and should satisfy someone, right?

I'm getting a dual 2.0 to replace my dual 1.0 because umm... it will make the internet faster or something.
Actually, my biggest reason for upgrading is that I have an old bsd server I want to ditch, and the G5 is alleged to be verrrry quiet.

Yep, I'll second that.
As soon as I can get a 17" iMac or a 12" PowerBook with a G5 I'll buy it.

Well, even though I don't need it, I am CONSIDERING purchasing a G5. My problem is I have a Dual 1 GHZ right now and it's plenty fast. So, do I need one? Absolutely not! Do I want one? Yes! Will I get one? Probably. I just need to justify it (and could use some help).

I'm like businezguy with dual 1 GHz MDD. It has 1.25 G of RAM and two 80 Gb drives.
I certainly don't NEED a G5... but I want one.
By the time my machine is out of warranty, (I have AppleCare), the second generation G5's should be on the market.
Then is when I will be looking at getting one. So, for now I just keep adding to the pot and save for it.
I will get one... some day.

If I get the G5, that would mean the end of my extended coffee breaks. So, no, no G5 until the G6 is around the corner.

Why thank you.
I had actually considered selling it. I leave for the Army in two weeks and am pretty sure I would not be able to use it much for the immediate future.
But, she is starting to show her age a little. The track pad is quirky, the audio-out port is dying, and the HD died last night suddenly. I managed to get the drive working again for the moment by popping it in the freezer for a few hours. It gave me enough time to back up some crucial data, and surf the boards here.
I imagine I could sell it, but I dont feel like having to lie about the condition of it to do so, which the previous owner did to me.

I'm getting a dual G5 with 23inch display (or whatever new displays are announced at the Paris expo). Do I need it? Well my current setup is a PM G4 400mhz with 20 gig HD and a 17inch studio display. So I reckon I should noticeable difference.
MOH, RTCW, Q3: Arena, are all ready and waiting to look and run spectacularly....
I'm sure I'll do some work on it too....
(p.s. I am getting 1000 USD for the PM)

Of course I don't need one, but if Apple sells one more G5, then they are that much farther from going under.

I'll be getting one in Feb/March '04 with whatever speed bump it gets at that point.
My upgraded Sawtooth 350Mhz -> 1 Ghz / 2 GB / Radeon 8500 / 120GB WDSE is doing just fine but it does not just chew on games and it can a few minutes to crunch some images.
Plus, I like getting a big computer and holding on to it for 3-4 years. Maybe upgrading memory, drive, video card along the way.

I'm getting one, but I definitely need it!
Replacing my 5 year old G4-500.
Just got the shipping confirmation today as a matter of fact!
Dual 2ghz, 2 gigs RAM, Radeon 9800, 250 gig HD and all the trimmings.
I am expecting to be able to get 8 hours worth of work done in 5 as soon as that bad boy shows up!

I have a 1.42 duel. its VERY quiet.
They changed the fans in January and towers since then are not noisey at all.
I'm waiting on a duel 3 gig G5 then I'll buy, my almost new 1.42 is very nice for me for now.
But.. I am getting a 1.6 gig G5 single processor for my sister. I think it will be a nice computer for her..she has a 877 mhz G4 tower now, but wants a dvd burner and uses it basically for imovie and email and the web and thats it so she'll be very happy with that.

I want one but I definitely don't need one. It's not like it's going to speed up my web-browsing.
But I'm really really tempted just to get one for games, photoshop, mp3-encoding, and buttery smooth .avi playback. It really sucks when VLC keeps telling me I have dropped frames b/c my computer's too slow.

I posted this in response to someone else wondering whether he should upgrade a dual G4 to the G5:
"YES! You should get the G5.
THEN, to justify your purchase, and assuage your guilt, you should donate your old machine to the nonprofit organization that I work with..."
When I saw this thread, it occurred to me that there may be others who might be interested in donating their G4 to charity if they get a G5. Because it is a tax deductible donation, it may actually be worth more to donate the G4 than to sell it.
While I advocate a particular charity that I work with ( www.rimemusic.org), I think it may be a good idea in general to donate -- certainly, many people donate their old cars to charity when they need a new one. Plus, the good deed of donating an aging computer might just be the incentive to get that speedy, new G5 that you really really want.

Im getting a dual G5 with 1.5GHz of RAM (for now) with a Radeon 9800 card.
Im on a TiBook 400MHz now, and its a bit too slow.
I mostly do webdesign, i dont NEED that much speed, I probably could settle for a used dual 800MHz Quicksilver, but naaah...
G5, here I come.

You can't have a 5 year old G4 500, they were introduced in september of 1999, that would put your G4 at being JUST under 4 years old.
That said, my iMac was bought in october of 1999... man... sniffle... he's almost 4!
But I'm getting a shiny new iBook.
And Fred (my iMac) will remain a very happy MP3 player, file server, and internet terminal for dorm mates

Power-wise, I'm pretty happy with my dual gig, but you can ALWAYS have more power.
The kicker for me is noise. I spent a lot of effort to reduce noise in my machine, so it's not bad, but noise is a big enough issue that I'm willing to cough up the 2-3 grand to get a more powerful machine that's even queiter.

No, I don't need the dual 2Ghz that I have on order... not at all. In fact, the only computer I own right now is my PB 12, and it does everything that I need to do and then some. So why am I getting it? Sheer vanity and because I want one. Nothing more. Yes, it's sad but true.
My GF's pissed over it. I could probably use the $ for other things, but I don't care. The power WILL be mine. MUHAHAHA!

Actually I'm in the "need" catagory. My wife's PeeCee was shot down by lightning and has agreed to "switch"being the loving wife that she is. (BTW she just dictated that last part.) My iBook 466 SE w/FW needs to be with me during the day and she really needs a desktop. (She hasn't heard it's the year of the laptop apparently! ) Anyway I really don't want to shell out for an iMac when a 1.6 is just a little more $$. I'd personally like to get a 1.8 but I really don't think our budget will stretch that far.
Looking forward to placing my order next week.
