Formac has a new monitor out that looks like it matches the box of the new G5. It looks like the same monitor as their older 2010 Oxygen model, but this one is called the 2010 Platinum. The only difference I can see is that instead of having white around the screen, it has a metalish frame around the screen. They see fit to charge an extra $300 for this monitor. That really makes me upset.

I'll bet that as soon as Apple releases their monitors to match the G5, formac's price will come down on this monitor. I'd order one now if the price were the same as the Oxygen model.

Hmm just had a quick look, isnt the Platinum series the one theyve always had, before they introduced the Oxygen series.

The extra ££ you pay means 2 instead of 7 dead pixel swap and 1yr instead of 3 on the warranty

revs.

they still look nice Ill wait with my 19" crt till i see something i really like i think.
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

you dingus, thats not new, they've had that for the longest time. =) they're not gouging - if you actually read the site, what ou're paying for is a dead-pixel count of like, 1. and for some, namely graphics pros, it's worth it. sheesh.

I paid around 1,900 bucks for a 20" Formac LCD moniter in February.

Not one dead pixel.

Sturdy as a rock. Not one problem EVER.

TOTALLY PLEASED.

so the new one is like 1,400 and your complaining? Thats 500 less than what I paid!

Buy two!

Didn't realize that. Glad you cleared that up for me. The two just looked almost identical and I couldn't find any other differences. I've just begun shopping for a monitor to match the G5 I'm about to order and I thought they had put out the Platinum monitor to match the case more closely. Forgive me for trashing Formac undeservedly. Maybe I will by that Formac display after all.

I don't have a Formac but have been thinking about it. I was also worried about the quality but I was recently saw some in a graphics studio department at a major publication and played with it and checked out the quality. It looks great and sturdy plus these pros wouldn't mess around with something that wasn't up to the task.

Also, if you're not using it for serious graphics work, there's nothing wrong with the Oxygen version - the main difference is the # of dead pixels that they allow. I've see nthe Platinum and Osygens side-by-side and the quality of the screens seemd identical. =)

Before I bought my 20" Apple Cinema Display, I struggled about Apple-vs-Formac. I decided on the Apple, even though it had a shorter warranty, and greater pixel replacment policy, mainly because from what I had read in some of the forums. The Formac is a fine piece of equipment, but according to most comments the company has a horrible track record with service issues. Equipment is great until you have to have it fixed and then the real test occurs. I found a great Apple retailer in Orlando that spent a great amount of time with me and I know would quickly assist with any warranty issues. That to me is worth more than saving a few bucks. I like to support small business. BTW - the Apple display is wonderful. I have not looked back!
