I have several G3 B&W machines with dead CD drives. I want to buy several cheap (<$50) CD-RW IDE drives to replace them. I'm running Jaguar.

Will one of those cheapo Memorex CDRW ($40) IDE drives work in my B&W G3 350MHz Mac?

If not, is there an inexpensive Mac compatible CDRW you would recommend?

i use a 15 dollar 52 X burner with my Dual 867.

Go to http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drived....drivedb.lasso -- it's a drive compatibility database and is quite extensive.

One thing to watch out for with the 3rd party drives is that many of them won't be able to boot your machine if you have a problem. But the database listed above should steer you in the right direction.

Most of them will boot just fine. The only thing is that you'll need to get Toast to use the drive if you run OS 9. (OS X is more forgiving.)

I slapped in a $30 Lite-On burner that I picked up at one of those (PC) computer shows. Works good in OS9, great in X running Toast.
