I'm waiting to upgrade Carrara (I can go MS or Apple or on the upgrade, but not both). Prior to the G5 announcement I was leaning toward the PC version upgrade because I thought Mac would never catch up in the 3D realm.

But now things are looking good, heh?

Would I be safe in upgrading to the Mac version now assuming the G5 will be a monster 3D modeling machine, or sadly, will the wintel boxes still be a better performance buy?

Do you have a fairly high-end PC right now? If you do - considering economics - you would probably be better off upgrading to a PC version of the software.

and even if they are just "close" (which i do think the g5 will not be. it will be a lot faster on some things.)

you still get the OSX user experience and access to final cut and dvd studio in case you decided to go that way. to me that means alot.

I agree. And this is simply the beginning. Apple did their homework -- most of it, at least. And I'm really happy about it, because my next workstation for all my modeling and 3-D work in school (when I can afford one) will most certainly be a dual G5. I'd say go for it.
