I came home last night to be told that during a big thunderstorm my rev B iMac (not switched on) had made a 'phut... poof' noise during a particular lightning strike (my 7 year olds description). Ever since then the modem seems to be completly dead (no dialing).

Could it have been fried in the thunderstorm?

How hard are they to replace? - I have an iMac at work which is on a network, so doesn't need its modem.

Actually it IS possible to replace the modem and not too hard (but about a 30 minute process not a simple slip in and out.)

As I was thinking because I've never actually worked with the older imacs I was suspicious that they use the same modem cards modern macs use... I was right and can give you RELATIVE instructions on how to remove/replace/get to the modem ^_^

It is supposed to be for removing your modem and installing a serial card but I think this will do the trick!

Good luck!

Basically, anything running from a pole outside that's plugged into an electronic device can hurt it. May it be power, tele, or cable. Always unplug during storms or get a good surge protector.

Do a search for replacing the modem, it's been discussed.
