By that I mean that the install went fine, until the countdown to restart. At that restart I get the grey screen with the apple logo and then it after a second it looks as if there are two erased lines horizontally across the monitor. These are wide lines, about an inch wide apiece. Imagine the grey/apple screen being on a chalkboard, and then little Billy Gates comes along and smears two horizontal lines through the chalk drawing. After this happens I hear the hard drive spin down, but the internal CD drive still works. A second try at install produced the same thing. I have to boot off of the 9 CD and then select my 9 system to get back up and running.
The machine:
Bondi Rev B. iMac with the PowerLogix iForce 400 MHz G3 upgrade card.
2x256mb memory for a total of 512 (these are new chips in anticipation of Jaguar).
40 GB Maxtor hard drive with 3 partitions (OS 9, OS X and the rest as another partition). The OS partitions are within the first 8GB. OS X is an extended format partition, the other two are standard format partitions. Partitioning error on my part which I will deal with later.
Formac iProTV SCSI/TV card.
Internal Sony CD-R.
Are upgrade cards not supported? PowerLogix seems to think that their iForce cards will run X. The box for X is somewhat unclear on this point.
Tried pulling the memory and going back to an old 128 chip, but the same problem. The 2x256 worked fine under 9.2.2.
I'm new to X, but was able to install it successfully on my Beige G3. Both installs were custom- cut out the extra languages and most of the printers.
So- zap the PRAM when trying to boot into X?
Or is it the processor upgrade, the SCSI card or the RAM?
Thanks-
Val

I just tried the firmware update and got a message saying that the firmware is already up to date.
And the OS 9 is 9.2.2.
PowerLogix has a "Cache Control" update to use with X, but it assumes that you already have X running.
Could I try my original processor again, or once you upgrade you can never go back?

you can go back to the original processor, but need to update the firmware on it.
Also, I have had this problem on a bone stock iMac 233. My solution was to drop the drive in a powermac, install OS X and then put it back in the iMac, where it has been fine.

Must be the SCSI card. I just tried a reinstall with the stock processor and the same thing happened. I will pull the iProTV card this weekend and see if that solves the problem. If not, I will do the hard drive swap.

Definitely do that. I seem to remember my Voodoo2 screwing up the 10.0 install. That was one of the ugliest OS installs I've ever had. Everything was hunky dory after I yanked the card out. I put it back in afterwards and everything worked fine. I think it screwed up one of the updates also (10.0 -> 10.1 maybe). I can't recall though.

Finally got OS X to install by taking out the hard drive and putting it in the Beige G3 that I have. I took out the iProRaid card but that did not help. Things seem to be working but I'm getting occasional freezes. It has happened about half a dozen times since I started Safari. I will try to use some other program to see if it continues. Also- what display mode should I use with my Bondi iMac.
