I supervise a small advertising/graphics department in a mid-sized company. After much number crunching, hemming, and hawing, I was able to convince the President and Chairman to allow me to "upgrade" our hardware.

Currently our Graphic Artist is working on a G4 933mhz Quicksilver. The plan was to upgrade the GA's computer as well as our WebDev's and I get the Quicksilver. Byebye PeeCee! I had placed an order with MacConnection for 2 Dual 1.25 MDDs, but they have informed us that Apple has them on backorder. MacConnection only has single 1.25's in stock.

So here are my choices...either buy two G4 1.25's or buy one of each (G5 and G4). My budget is very limited, and I am only able to order from MacConnection. I probably won't be able to upgrade again until 2005.

(G5 and G4)
Pros: The G5 will be more than what we currently need. Newer technology means that it won't be obsolete any time soon. It's a G "freakin" 5!
Cons: Rev A tech. Repairs are a major hassle in Guam.

(Two G4's)
Pros: This setup is really good enough for everything we do.

Cons: Dated technology may be obsolete in the near future. How well will these systems run Panther?

So what should I do?

I'd say G5 all the way; if there's any way you can get ever ONE G5 in there, DO IT!

Buy one of each and have the best of both worlds

But really if the G4s do everyting you need to do now - save your company the xtra cash and make sure they know you have! Panther should run beautifully on the G4's.

Don't forget about expandability/upgrades - which machine will be cheaper to accomodate these?

G4s are still nice computers, especially if you beef it up with lots of RAM and extra HD space. I'd rather have two Beefed up G4s (I mean, like MAX the RAM) than one G5.

Thanks to all who replied.

I ended up getting one of each. I could not resist being one of the first here in Guam to get a G5! Maybe I'll just keep it in my office.

Just an update:

My boss got us two G5 1.6's with 17" Apple Displays 1.2 GB Ram and 160gb of hd space. Needless to say, I kept one for myself and shifted our dept.'s computers a bit.

I'm typing on it now, and I am in love. Now if I could just get a raise. Hmmm...maybe I should get back to work, then.
