OK, I am considering upgrading my QS to a dual 1Ghz from PowerLogix. I was looking at their pricing and they seem very reasonable to me. Originally I was thinking of dual 867, then 933 and now 1Ghz. Looking for input. I have a radeon 8500 with 64MB, over a Ghz of ram and a usb card. Hmm, I guess I should add a HD too. Thoughts and comments appreciated.

I wouldn't go for anything less than a Dual 1.25. You can also check out the upgrades by Giga Design: they get very favorable reports on places like xlr8yourmac.com.

Much as I like duals 1+1 is not 2. A dual give you no more speed unless the application is SMP but it does give you more "torque" to keep up many applications at once. Even if you add dual 1.25 it willl just be a little bit faster if you only have some few apps running. The big difference is those SMP apps and if you run a lot of stuff at the same time. The snag is that if the 867 is to slow in non SMP apps UT2003 and other games so will a a dual 1 GHz. A single G4 at twise the speed would be usefull. But there are no 1.7 Ghz G4 out there yet (if there ever will be) a 1.3-1.4 will be usefull and still cost less than a dual 1.0.
An other option is to save those 500-900 dollars and upgrade the G5 you might plan to buy with soemthing faster
If you plan to hang on to your 867 it is a good idea to do a CPU upgrade but if the dual or single CPU is the best really depend on your habits

Well, that is good news. I actually feel the slow down when I have multiply Apps open at the same time. Hmm, maybe I should just go for the dual 867 for under $500 and upgrade to a new g5 in a year. What do you think?

I am glad someone else is talking about this... I have a single 867, that I am definetly hanging onto and I am thinking about upgrading it... let me know how everything goes, and what you decided to go with.

Slider, that plan sounds brilliant because it's such a low-cost move, sets you up to enjoy the benefits of DP, which will be more evident in the Finder with Panther's release, and enables you to save for a more powerful and less costly Dual G5 (as compared to the current offering).
I upgraded from a 933 single QS to a Dual 1.42 machine (not an upgrade card) because I desperately needed more power and was concerned about the compatibility of an upgrade card with Panther.
The upgrade has been more than worth it. My main app, FCP4, is much quicker. Good luck to you.
