For a beige g3. If you install another IDE card (one of those ACARDS, or the rebranded Sonnet Tempo cards)... do you still need to partition 8 GB for it to work?

Anyone know?

I'm wondering if it's the IDE controller on board that's the issue. If bypassing it with a card is the way to go... then I'm all set.
I always use protection when fscking my Mac... Do you?

I believe that it is an issue with the ROM rather than the IDE controller.

I am unable to find the info to confirm this now, so if someone has the scoop...

Yeah, its a ROM issue I believe.

What i'd do is install 10.2 on your 8 gig, and put another HD run off the PCI card in for storage. My beige server only has a 2 GIG boot partition, you don't need much more for the core.

I'm pretty sure you're stuck partitioning either way. I know I had to when I was running OSX off of my 9 gig ultra-wide scsi, and after that died and I replaced it with an 80 gig IDE drive, I was somehow under the impression that it had to be done there too. Being that those were two completely different controllers, I agree with the other two posters that I think it's a ROM issue and you're stuck partitioning...

Let me throw in another voice to say you're stuck partitioning.

You don't HAVE to partition. Just make sure you install it on the first 8 gigs of the HD.

Can someone explain what this ROM issue is? OS 9 was able to install and boot off of a larger partition than that.

Also MilkmanDan, you do have to partition, if the drive is larger than 8, the OS X installer won't let you select the disk.
