This wont be a big deal. IBM has been fabbing G5s up to this point, and will continue again on Saturday. This will have very little effect, if any, on pre-orders, and may only slightly effect orders made within the last month (move it back a few days).
All in all, ths is really a non-issue.

I wonder if they could have had a back-up generator.
Maybe the use to much power for them to use a backup generator .

They have backup generators that let the plant keep running for a bit, then shut down. They can only keep it alive for so long. I guess they probably spend enough on them so that the cost of shutting down is less than the cost of fuel to keep going.

They do have multiple back-up generators and plenty of fuel. The important thing with such a massive power outage is that they be able to put the plant in a standby mode and not just let it stop in the middle of production. With all the automated equipment and various stages of chip production a complete failure of power and instant stoppage of the line would be a small disaster, taking a long time to get things back up and running. By putting it to "sleep" they can turn it back on methodically and suffer little damage. If this was a small black-out they might just use the generators to keep up full production but with such a huge chunk of the grid down and no firm timeframe or restoration it is far safer to just idle the plant and not take a risk of hurting the line.

"The largest U.S. blackout ever struck New York on Thursday, leaving part of six U.S. states and the Canadian province of Ottawa without power, an area where an estimated 50 million people live."
Ignorant ass... he means the Canadian province of Ontario. Ottawa, Canada's capital city, is in Ontario and did lose power. Maybe their copy editor couldn't make it work...

When I read it originally, I was embarassed that I couldn't recall the Canadian providence of Ottawa I'm happy to find out I wasn't the ignorant one this time.

PS. I still think Canada is responsible for the black-out. When in doubt blame Canada

Yeah, that province-of-Ottawa thing is lame, esp. considering Ottawa is the capital of the country, and thus is where the American embassy is located, too. However:
Editor's note: This story has been updated to correct a reference to Ontario, the Canadian province affected by the blackout.
P.S. It seems my sigs have been blacked out too...
