Congrats Kokapeli! You might actually be one of the first to use the G5.
Make sure you're prepared:
  • Batteries charged
  • Cameras cleaned
  • Desk prepared for new G5-goodness.
  • Trusty ol' iBook prepped for eBay auction
  • Logged in to MacNN
  • Caffeine for all-nighter first day you get it!

Well, it looks like he hasn't actually gotten a shipping confirmation. He has delivery date of 08/29.

Kokapeli, you'll get a shipping email from Apple when it actually ships, with tracking information. I'm not sure where the G5s are assembled, but I wouldn't be surprised if the thing was directly shipped from Taiwan or something.

Oh, and welcome, Kokapeli.

I imagine the Apple Stores have tracking info, if not the actual machines by now.

I did the "first rev" bit 5 years ago with my "beige" G3. I'll be waiting a month or so while the people who jumped first complain about how things don't work, and Apple fixes stuff.
Is this a good place for an argument?

Yes, I guess I am. I want one, even though I don't need it.

I might get one in 2004, unless of course a new superfast next-gen PowerBook magically appears. I'm waiting for revision B, and a G5 with X.3.1 or above pre-installed.

I have. A 1.6GHz PowerPC G5. Says the Est. shipping date is "On or before 08/29/2003." Sadly, it has not shipped out yet.

You are so weird! You don't need it but you want a rev b?!

What is wrong with 10.3 that you want 10.3.1 installed?

My guess is they'll be at something like X.3.3 by the time the rev. B ships anyway, so the point is moot.

No way, I am not touching it until it ships with 10.3.4 as there is no way in hell I would buy it if it only had 10.3.3 and I would have to download 10.3.4!

Well this guy got his two 1.6 G5s.
THAT GUY is full of BS. No way, ain't buying it. A world full of Mac users waiting for the world's fastest personal computer that has been 'shipping' since Monday, and nobody has seen one in a store or has gotten a tracking number? Give me a break.

They'll be here when they're here. I doubt the world will end due to lack of computing cycles our lowly G4s currently produce

More of his posts (no pix posted yet):

I'll get pics today. The PowerMac G5 disc has OS Version 10.2.7 (g5) AHT Version 2.1 DVD Version 1.0. The keyboard is different in the location of the usb ports, and if you look at the current keyboard, there are raised plastic around the groupings of keys, while on the new keyboard, it is as if the keys sit up higher off the keyboard. It is totally different, no brekas between the F keys above the letters.

The G5 does run with the cover off the side.

Currently on the G5, altivec came in at 3.4 3975. I just got a 1.5 8628 on my dual 1.25G4. I ran again and got 3.3 4055 on the g5. Its rather quiet, with my G4 making much more noise, not that much more, but you can hear the G4 under my desk, the G5 is a much quieter. I have the picture, how do I post it here? [Eug note: I have no idea what the Altivec Fractal numbers mean.]

I had my in house publications person snap a photo of the inside, it's not the best, but it'll have to do for now. I can email it to someone who is willing to post for me

I believe from what I've read - all initial orders are going to education since that's more time sensitive.

Went to the Stanford Bookstore and they have about 23 1.6s and 7 1.8s

the picture is real, they are all there, but none on display, only the boxes. I would mention the price, but you can only buy if you have a school ID.

Hmm. Would it be possible for you to buy it for "one of us " with your student ID and "one of us " would send you the dollar amount of the retail G5 at the Apple.com website - meaning you'd make $200 or so. Just so "one of us " could have it before any one else does..

Nice try, do I have the word "dumb___" hanging off me? Just kidding, sorry but I have limited purchase, can only buy 1 Apple machine per year and I want my G5 this year.

Eventually we would both be able to get the G5. You would also make enough money from the profit to not have to buy one using the educational discount, I'd just have it sooner than you. Your loss is my gain . ...maybe not .

I just don't see how Apple's going to make the magic 8/29/03 date that they've given the first group of (end-user) orders if, as it appears, they haven't shipped a single G5 to an end-user yet.

I have a feeling that I'm going to wake up on Friday morning to find the date (for my 2.0) move back a month.
